Professional Machine Quilting

Quilting Styles & Pricing

I have based the cost of my Quilting Services on the size of the quilt combined with complexity of quilting required. All prices are in Australian Dollars & are current as at 1st July, 2011.  I do not charge GST as this business is not registered for this.

To ascertain the size of the quilt top, measure the length & width of your quilt through the centres.

Multipy these two figures then divide by 144, this will give you the size in square feet.

 For Example: 80" long x 60" wide = 4800 sq inches  =  33.33 sq feet

                         144

Now that you have calculated the size of the quilt top, the cost of quilting will depend on how you want the quilting design to be completed based on the prices below. Please note, these are the most commonly asked for services - a more detailed listing is available here (in pdf format & you will need Acrobat Reader to view & print it out).

Basting is an intermittent stitch (approx 1” apart) stitched in a grid approx 4" apart, over the required area or entire quilt.  The outside edge of the quilt is also basted with a shorter stitch to secure the raw edge. This service is most useful for hand & domestic machine quilter’s, saving them the back breaking work of basting their own quilts. Priced at $1:80 per sq foot.

Edge to Edge or Continuous quilting designs are a continuous, repeat design stitched from side to side across the quilt & from top to bottom.  There are many designs available ranging from Flowers, Leaves, Hearts, Novelty, Generic & many more.  This style of work is generally the most economical & often suits simple pieced quilts or busy fabric prints where specific designs would not be obviously seen. Priced at $4:00 per sq foot for average density of stitching, $4:50 per sq foot for much heavier quilting.

Stipple/Meander is a continuous curvy line of stitching, similar to the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces.  A traditional style of quilting, size can vary but average is approx 1 1/2" to 2" apart over the entire quilt top as a basic all over design. More detailed stippling is available depending on the quilt top & areas required, separate prices are available on request. Priced from $3:00 to $5:50 per sq foot.

Panto Plus is where an edge to edge or continuous design is used in the body of the quilt, with a separate/matching design stitched in the outer border.  Additional border designs can be added where necessary. Priced from $6:00 per sq foot (includes one sashing & one border, for extra borders an extra fee applies)

Customised Quilting is more specific to certain areas or your quilt.  The stitching is more confined within blocks, sashings & borders.  Applique is normally stiched in the ditch (SID) which helps to define the shape, also main seams/borders where necessary.  Background stitching can also be applied to fill negative spaces.  Various designs can be used in these areas to achieve quite simple or elaborate results.

Basic designs are charged at $7:50 per sq foot, more detailed work is charged from $8:50 to $10:00 per sq foot. Set up Fee will also apply, see below.

Block of the Month quilts which include stitchery designs often require more detailed quilting to suit the areas of the piecing & applique, will usually require separate sashing & border designs. Priced from $9:00 per sq foot. Set Up Fee will also apply, see below.

Pictorial & Art Quilts involve more specific & detailed quilting, generally achieved with mostly freehand quilting in specific areas. Please Contact Val for detailed pricing on these type of quilts.

Adding Binding to your quilt is also available on request. Clients will need to supply a continuous binding strip so it can be readily attached to the edge of their quilt.  Alternatively, clients can supply enough fabric for this to be made then applied by the quilter. This is then sewn onto the front edge of the quilt (while still on the machine frame) with all corners mitred & ends joined with a diagonal seam. Hand sewing the binding strip to the back of the quilt will need to be completed by the client as time restraints do not allow me to complete this for you. Priced from $10:00 to $20:00 to make binding, & from $10:00 to $35:00 to apply to quilt, both prices depend on size of the quilt.

Minimum Charge for any size quilt is $65:00.

Turning of Quilt is done to most larger quilts so the border design can be stitched to continue around the quilt. Priced from $15:00 to $25:00 depending on size of quilt.

Set Up Fee applies to all Customised Quilting & is priced individually depending on size of quilt. This fee will be included with any quotes by email or phone. When the quilt arrives at the Studio, this may be reduced or waived depending on how well the quilt is prepared & the time I feel will be required to load onto the machine for quilting. Contact Val for further details.

Labour Charge - depending on the quilting techniques required, if it is not clearly defined in the above categories a labour charge may be applied at $30:00 per hour.

Wadding: I carry Matilda's Own Wool/Poly wadding 240cm wide, also MO 100% Cotton Wadding 240cm wide & MO Oh-So-Soft Polyester Wadding 150cm wide. Other types of wadding can be arranged, some are available locally. Prices will vary but are competitive with other quilt shops in the area & are available on request.

Backing fabric: I carry a limited range of backing fabrics which are all 100% Cotton - colour, quality & size will vary but are competitive with other local quilt shops in the area & are available on request. Should you require the backing fabric to be joined, this will incur a small fee depending on size required for your quilt.

Threads: I only use quality threads for the quilting in colours which will tone with your quilt. The basic ones I use are Rasant or Signature brands, are quality cotton threads & quite reliable. There are other brands & types of thread which can be used such as Aurifil, Superior & King Tut, all of which are also quality threads. these may be used depending on the colour or effect required for your quilt.  All thread requirements will be discussed during the initial consultation when your quilt is delivered.
